Harris helps sponsor legislation to designate Blue Star Mothers Day

State Rep. Mike Harris and the Michigan House of Representatives on Thursday approved a plan co-sponsored by Harris to recognize Feb. 1 each year as Blue Star Mothers Day in the state of Michigan.

Founded in Michigan, Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. is a national organization comprised of mothers of members of the military. Harris, R-Waterford, said the annual recognition will honor Blue Star Mothers’ work to support the U.S. armed forces, military families, and veterans.

“Blue Star Mothers of America does so much for the men and women in the U.S. military,” Harris said. “The mothers who form this noble organization are service-minded patriots through and through. They first raised their own sons and daughters to answer the call of duty, and now, as Blue Star Mothers, they actively support all our nation’s troops. Observing Blue Star Mothers Day each year will honor these dedicated mothers and remind us all to serve our country and support our armed forces.”

On Feb. 1, 1942 — eight weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor — 300 mothers of World War II service members met in Flint, and Blue Star Mothers of America was born.

The idea quickly spread around the country. Today, the national organization continues to help and honor members of the military and promote patriotism. Blue Star Mothers of America sends care packages to deployed troops, welcomes returning veterans, honors fallen heroes, and cares for military families, including those who have lost loved ones.

House Bill 4047 passed the House unanimously and now advances to the Senate for consideration.
