State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz is joined at the Capitol by Doug Brinker, a Jackson resident, veteran, two-time suicide survivor, and LifeWays volunteer, after the Michigan House adopted her resolution declaring September 2026 as Suicide Prevention Month in michigan.
State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz this week sponsored a House resolution declaring September 2026 as Suicide Prevention Month in Michigan, highlighting the importance of mental health awareness, community support, and suicide prevention resources.
Schmaltz raised awareness for the resolution during remarks on the House floor on Tuesday, National Military and Veterans Suicide Awareness Day. She was joined by Doug Brinker, a Jackson resident, veteran, two-time suicide survivor, and volunteer with LifeWays, the Jackson-Hillsdale Community Mental Health program. After Schmaltz recognized Brinker for his military service, advocacy, and willingness to share his personal story to help others, members of the Michigan House of Representatives gave him a standing ovation.
“Suicide prevention starts with connection, compassion, and a willingness to reach out to people who may be struggling,” said Schmaltz, R-Jackson. “By recognizing Suicide Prevention Month, we’re helping raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind people that support is available. No one should feel like they have to face a crisis alone.”
The resolution recognizes that suicide affects families and communities across Michigan while emphasizing that suicide is preventable. It encourages Michigan residents to learn the warning signs, check in on loved ones, and connect people in need with available resources.
Schmaltz said hearing from people facing similar struggles is an important part of the conversation.
“Stories like Doug’s are a reminder that hope and recovery are possible,” Schmaltz said. “I’m grateful for all the advocates, mental health professionals, volunteers, and community organizations working every day to support people in crisis and save lives.”
