I hope your first month of the new year went well and that 2024 is off to a good start. The Michigan House of Representatives is back in session for its new legislative year, with a new balance of power. Until special elections this spring, the House is evenly split between Republican and Democrat members 54 to 54.  

My hope is that this would bring a chance to get back to true bipartisan problem solving in Lansing. I personally have hoped to see movement several bills I sponsor that could bring much needed help to families across Michigan. Legislation includes like my Family Affordability bills (House Bills 5264, 5265, 5266, 5267 and 5268) and my first bill of 2024 (House Bill 5398) which would give our National Guard Retirees their first pay raise in 57 years. Unfortunately, my Democrat colleagues have refused to give any of these bills even a committee hearing! Despite their stance, I am going to keep working hard for good, bipartisan policies during this time of split power in the House.  

Further, last week, the Governor gave her annual State of the State Address. Unfortunately, I believe it lacked actual solutions to our state’s troubles. You can read more of what I had to say here or hear about it here.

As the 2024 budget process rapidly approaches, I am going to stay focused on what is best for Mid-Michigan. The people of Midland and Gladwin counties deserve more than soundbites, and I am going to do my best to make sure that your state government works for you. I was pleased to share news last week that Beaverton will be getting a $10 million dollar grant from EGLE to improve their drinking water system.  

It was also my pleasure to welcome several classes from Woodcrest Elementary School on to the floor of the House of Representatives this week. I always enjoy hearing their questions and seeing their smiling faces!

Rep. Schuette, Sen. Hauck Hail New Water Infrastructure Grant for Beaverton

State Rep. Bill G. Schuette (R-Midland) and State Sen. Roger Hauck (R-Union Township) today highlighted an announcement from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) that will bring crucial infrastructure upgrades to people in the city of Beaverton.

A grant to fund water system improvement projects throughout the city has been approved. The projects will include replacement of old undersized watermains, as well as new watermains at Pearson Avenue, Porter Street, Brown Street to Pearson Street, Tonkin Street, 2nd Street, M18/Ross Street, Terry Diane Street and from the water tower to Terry Diane Street.

The projects also include new source well installation, updated storage tanks and control systems, a new backup generator and new water meters. “These are critical upgrades to the City of Beaverton and help ensure those families and households living in Beaverton will have important upgrades to their water infrastructure.,” said Schuette, who represents Beaverton as part of the 95^th Michigan House District. “Communities like Beaverton are a great place to live and deserve investment from our state government and I continue to fight for them in our appropriations process.”

“People and their families expect and deserve clean, safe water when they turn on their faucet, and these upgrades from older equipment will ensure that continues to be the case,” said Hauck, who represents Beaverton as part of the 34^th Michigan Senate District. “This funding will help Beaverton make key improvements for residents.”
